Solange Beugiron has been restless since her mother's death and her father doesn't know what to do to appease her. He decides to introduce Solange to the grandmother she never knew existed, Marthe De Florian. Solange is instantly intrigued with Marthe and her beautiful living quarters furnished with gorgeous relics. Marthe also feels a bond with Solange and decides to share her life story with the aspiring writer. What develops between the two of them is quite lovely and the reader learns more about Marthe's past and Solange's future as they both transpire.
I did have some difficulty becoming interesting in Marthe's story initially, but within a short time, I was completely immersed in the storyline and couldn't put the book down. I thought the author did an excellent job portraying strong female characters that were very diverse but showed resilience and fortitude. I had read some articles before about the Paris apartment that was found exactly as it had been before World War II, and The Velvet Hours provided another insight into what might have happened.
