In present day, Brette visits the RMS Queen Mary and encounters a spirit that she believes is Annaliese and that encounter leads her on an investigation as to what happened when a group of European war brides traveled across the Atlantic Ocean to America on the RMS Queen Mary. Brette becomes drawn into the story of those women, the lives they were trying to leave behind, and the future they were looking forward to in America.
All the women's stories come to vivid life and the RMS Queen Mary becomes a character in its own right. I could envision all three women and related to their struggles and their strength. This was the first book that I had read by Susan Meissner and I plan to read more of her work in the future.
