There is a reason The Education of Dixie Dupree is one of Amazon's best books of the month. Dixie Dupree is a precocious young girl growing up in Perry County, Alabama in 1969. Dixie has found one thing she is particularly talented in and that is telling lies. Sometimes she lies to protect herself. Other times she lies to protect someone else or simply lies for no reason. As her deceit grows, she begins to see the fragile threads connecting her family start to fray. Will her untruthfulness cause more problems than she anticipated?
Throughout the book, Dixie has to endure many things that no one, let alone an 11 year old girl, should ever have to go through but she remains strong and vigilant no matter what occurs. The author does a tremendous job of capturing the voice and spirit of 11 year old Dixie Dupree. You can definitely sense her longing for love and acceptance, along with her anger, confusion and distress throughout the story.
This book is a strong debut novel and I hope to read more from Donna Everhart in the future. I think it would make an excellent book club selection.
